Facts and Myths
Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF)
Architectural Coating Systems
Facts:
- One of the best coatings available for metal
roofing applications
- Excellent weathering performance
-
- Film Integrity can be warranted for up to 40
Years
- Available in an array of colors
Myths:
Myth 1: All PVDF coating systems are the same
The performance of PVDF
coating systems can vary substantially, depending on both the type and amount
of resins, pigments and additives used during manufacture. Most architectural PVDF coating systems
utilize a minimum 70% PVDF resin base in their formulation, but not all.
Myth 2: Kynar and Hylar are names of architectural
coating systems
Kynar and Hylar are not coating
systems; they are trade names for Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) resins. In order to become an architectural coating,
paint manufacturers blend PVDF resins with other resins, pigments and
additives.
Myth 3: If you want a “Cool Roof”, you have to
purchase a PVDF coating
system
In order to be considered a
“Cool Roof”, a coating system needs to be able to deliver a high SRI (Solar
Reflective Index) value. “Go Green”
environmental programs such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design), require individual colors to achieve minimum SRI values to qualify for
certification credits. Any type of
polyester coating system can be used, including Regular Polyesters, Silicon
Modified Polyesters, Super Durable Polyesters and PVDF’s. The use of solar reflective pigments and
resin additives can increase SRI values for individual colors no matter what
type of system being used.
